Azan

Azan, literally announcement in Arabic (adan), is a call to ritual prayer for Muslims made from the minaret of a mosque by a muezzin. The practice was instituted at a time when it was difficult for common people to keep time for various reasons including lack of watches. However, in modern era, when keeping times is not so difficult, the practice has turned into ritual, minarets of the mosques are fitted with loudspeakers, and the muezzin makes call in front of a mike attached to the loudspeakers who does no more need to go up to a minaret for making the call.
