Baalbek

Baalbek (i. e. City of Baal, or the Sun), is a town in eastern Lebanon. It is famous as the site of the ancient city of Heliopolis. It was an ancient city of Syria, 35 miles northwest of Damascus which was called by the Greeks, Heliopolis. It was once a place of great size, wealth, and splendour, but now in ruins, the most conspicuous of which is the Great Temple to Baal, one of the most magnificent ruins of the East, covering an area of four acres.
