Backbone

Backbone is the bone in the back of a vertebrate from the skull to the pelvis. It is also called spine. The spine of a book is also called its backbone. In biochemistry it is the main chain of a polymeric molecule. However, in a system or organization, someone or something is said to be their backbone if they are their mainstay or chief support.
