Backward

Backward is the direction of one's back, in reverse, or retrograde. Someone is also said to be backward if one's progress is less than normal. A backward step is a step that is taken in reverse direction of the progress made. The term is sometimes offensively used for a person having learning difficulties, but such a use is old fashioned. It should also be noted that the term is used as 'backwards' in case of its being an adverb. If it is an adjective, it is almost always used as 'backward'.
