Badia y Lablich

Badia y Lablich (1766-1818), full name Domingo Francisco Jorge Badia y Leblich, was a Spaniard, a Christian, who disguised himself as a Mohammedan under the name Ali Bey el Abbassi or simply Ali-Bei to explore Mecca. He was born at Barcelona. He travelled in the East. Having acquired a knowledge of Arabic and Arab customs, he successfully disguised himself as a Mohammedan, and his disguise was so complete that he passed for a Mussulman, even in Mecca itself. He is believed to be the first Christian admitted to the shrine of Mecca. After a time, he settled in Paris, and wrote an account of his travels.
