Bahamas

Bahamas is a country. It is comprised of the Bahamas archipelago off the southeastern coast of Florida. It is situated in the northwestern West Indies in the Caribbean region. Nassau is its capital city. Surface area of this country is about 13,878 sq km. Dollar it its currency. English is the official language, but a Creole, a mother tongue formed from the contact of two languages, is also spoken.

It was here that Columbus first landed in the New World on October 12, 1492. It became a British colony in the 18th century, and remained so until 1973 when it became an independent country within the Commonwealth of Nations.
