Bain-marie

Bain-marie is a container used in slow cooking. It contains hot water into which a cooking pan with food items is placed to cook them slowly. The container is named after a Jewish alchemist Maria. The Latin balneum Mariae is 'bath of Maria' and the Greek kaminos Marias is 'furnace of Maria'.
