Ball and chain

Ball and chain was an instrument in which a heavy metal ball was attached to a chain. It was used to fasten the leg of a prisoner to prevent their escape. Any crippling encumbrance is also said to be a ball and chain which a person find too difficult to escape, such as the ball and chain of poverty.
