Baluster

Baluster is a term in architecture for a short pillar or column having a typical decorative design from which it derives its name. The design of the part of the pillar resembles the curving calyx tube of the flower, named balustre, literally 'wild pomegranate flower' in French. These are erected in series to support a rail or coping in a balcony or terrace of a building or a bridge. A leg of a furniture or any other decorative item is also called baluster if it resembles a baluster.
