Barbel

Barbel is a fleshy filament growing from the mouth or snout of a fish. There are several marine and freshwater fish of this variety.

Several such African fish are found in marine and freshwater, and their species belong to several families found in southern African coasts and estuaries. One of them Tachysurus feliceps belonging to the family Aniidae is particularly noteworthy because of its toxin-coated spine that can inflict a dangerous wound.

There is also a large European freshwater fish having this name. It lives in running water and has barbels hanging from its mouth. It belongs to the minnow family. Its zoological name is Barbus barbus, and the family Cyprinidae.
