Barbituric acid

Barbituric acid is a term in chemistry for a synthetic organic acid. It is a cyclic derivative of urea and malonic acid. Its chemical formula is C₄H₄O₃N₂. It is this acid from which barbiturates, a class of sedative and sleep-inducing drugs are derived.
