Bareilly

Bareilly is a district in the State of Uttar Pradesh in India. It lies between 28°10' to 28°54'North latitudes and 78°58' to 79°47' East longitudes and bounded by Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur in the East, Rampur in the west, Udham Singh Nagar(Uttarakhand) in the North and Badaun in the South.

The district derives its name from its headquarter town of the same name. The town Bareilly is also known as Bans-Bareilly because of its big bamboo market.

It has an area of about area of 4120 sq km.

As per census 2001 the district has a population of 4,465,344.

There are six tehsils and 14 development blocks in this district.

History

Historically it was the part of the ancient kingdom of Panchal. It found mention in the Mahabharat.

In the Medieval period it was under the Rohillas.

The modern city’s foundation was laid by Mukrand Rai in 1657.

It was capital of Rohilkhand region, and was handed over to the Nawab of Awadh and to East India Company.
