Barrier islands

Barrier islands are elongate seafront islands of sand formed by the action of the sea and having an elongate lagoonal or estuarine embayment behind them. A barrier island protects the mainland from erosion and storm, because it runs parallel and close to mainland. These islands are typically long and narrow.
