Basal Area

Basal area is a term in forestry for the area of the cross-section of a stem at breast-height, typically 4.5 feet or 1.37 meters above ground. When applied to a crop, the crop basal area is the sum of basal areas of all the stems. It is also measured as the total basal area per unit of area in the forest. It quantifies the stand density.
