Basilica

Basilica is the code of laws, in 60 books, compiled by Basil I, and Leo, his son and successor, first published in 887, and named after the former.

A large oblong hall or building used in ancient Rome as a court of law or for public assemblies was also being called basilica. Such structures had double colonnades and a semicircular apse. A building similar to a Roman basilica is also called basilica, especially those which are used as a Christian church. Churches are also sometimes named basilica, and the pope grants them special privileges.
