Bassorah

Bassorah, modern name Basra, is a port in Iraq (Asiatic Turkey), on the Shatt-el-Arab. It was a place of great commercial importance when Bagdad was the seat of the caliphate. For a time it sank into insignificance, but has of late revived. It is the capital of the eponymous Basra Governorate.
