Bathos

Bathos, literally depth in Greek, was introduced in literature by Alexander Pope in the early 18th century in the sense of an anti-climax, being a sudden descent from the sublime to the commonplace, trivial, or ridiculous. This effect is created by an unintentional and sudden lapse in mood.
