Batumi

Batumi is a seaport city of Georgia, formerly known as Batoum or Batum, is the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara. It is located on the coast of the Black Sea in Georgia's southwest, 20 kilometers north of the border with Turkey at the foot of the Caucasus. Tourism and gambling are its major economic activities. It is due to gambling, the city is also nicknamed "The Las Vegas of the Black Sea".

Other economic activities include industries like shipbuilding, food processing and light manufacturing. Since 2010, Batumi has been transformed by the construction of modern high-rise buildings, as well as the restoration of classical 19th-century edifices lining its historic Old Town.

The town was under Lazica (until 780), Kingdom of Abkhazia (780–1010), Kingdom of Georgia (1010–1455), Kingdom of Imereti (1455–1703), Ottoman Empire (1703–1878), Russian Empire (1878–1918), British Empire (1918–1920), Democratic Republic of Georgia (1920–1921), USSR (Adj. ASSR in G.SSR) 1921–1991, Adjara (de facto independent, de jure part of Georgia) (1991–2004), and now Georgia (Autonomous Republic of Adjara) since 2004.
