Bear
Bear is a large heavy mammal with thick fur and a very short tail. It walks on the soles of its feet. Most of the species of bear are omnivorous. This mammal is related to the dog family, zoologically speaking, to the family Ursidae. Several genera and species of bear are found. A teddy bear, a toy, is also called bear in short. A large, heavy, and cumbersome man is also called a bear. A rough, unmannerly, or uncouth person is informally called bear. The Bear is an informal nickname for Russia on this earth, and in the sky, the Bear is the name of the constellation Ursa Major or Ursa Minor.
There is a proverb — selling the bear's skin before one has caught the bear — that gives this name in the Stock Exchange to one who contracts to deliver stock at a fixed price on a certain day, in contradistinction from the 'bull', or he who contracts to take it, the interest of the former being that, in the intervening time, the stocks should fall, and that of the latter that they should rise. Bear is a pessimist market operator who expects the market price of shares to decline. The term also refers to the one who has sold shares which he does not possess, in the hope of buying them back at a lower price, when the market price of the shares come down in the near future. Bear is also a person who forecasts that prices of stocks or commodities will fall and acts accordingly, especially by selling shares hoping to buy them back later at a lower price.
