Beckmann

Beckmann (1738-1811), full name Johann Beckmann, was a German professor at Göttingen. He wrote "History of Discoveries and Inventions". He coined the word technology, which initially meant the science of trade, and which he first taught and wrote about it as an academic subject. Klemm states that he 'should be credited with being the first reliable historian of inventions' and so must be regarded as the father of the study of the History of Technology.
