Beelzebub

Beelzebub is a name for the Devil, who is the chief of devils, according to Christian mythology. However, he was worshiped by the ancient Phoenicians as god, was the 'god of flies', and protector against them. In the Bible, the name of this Philistine god is mentioned (2 Kings 1:2). As being a heathen deity, he was transformed by the Jews into a chief of the devils, or the Devil; sometimes identified with Satan, and sometimes his aide-de-camp. In late Latin, Beelzebub was a name for 'the Devil' which was a translation from Greek 'Beelzeboul' (Matt. 12:24).
