Belfast
Belfast is a port city and capital of Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom. It is also a county town of Antrim. It is situated on the Lagan, at the head of Belfast Lough, 100 miles north of Dublin. It was a large, flourishing, bright, and pleasant city with some fine streets and handsome buildings, Presbyterian, Catholic, and Methodist colleges. It was the centre of the Irish linen and cotton manufactures, the most important shipbuilding centre, and had also rope-making, whisky, and aerated-water industries. Its foreign trade in the beginning of 20th century was larger than even Dublin's. It is also capital of Ulster province made up of nine counties: six of these constitute Northern Ireland and the remaining three are in the Republic of Ireland. It is also head-quarters of Presbyterianism in Ireland. From the early 1970, Belfast suffered great damage and population decline due to sectarian violence by Irish Republican Army (IRA) and Loyalist parliamentary groups.Nearby pages
