Belles-lettres

Bellles-lettres, literally 'fine letters' in French, is a literary term that was primarily applied for literary essays and artistic criticism written and read for their aesthetic effect. However, the term is now applied for the literature considered a fine art. As a department of literature it implies literary culture belonging to the domain of art, whatever the subject may be or the special form. It includes poetry, the drama, fiction, and criticism.
