Belt

Belt is a strip worn around the waist or across the chest to support clothes or carry weapons. It is made or leather or other material. A strip used in various technical application is also called a belt. A conveyor belt is called belt in short. A band used in machinery for transferring motion from one wheel to another is also called a belt.

Belt is also a short form for seat belt worn by a person sitting on a seat of a moving vehicle, aircraft, etc. It is worn for safety.

A belt is also awarded as a sign of rank or achievement. In sports, such as judo, karate, etc, a belt of particular colour is awarded at an attainment of certain level. The person awarded a belt of particular colour in certain sports is referred to by the name, such as 'a karate black belt'.

The term 'the belt' also denotes a punishment of being struck with a belt. A heavy blow is also called a belt.

A belt is also a certain area having a characteristic different from its surrounding, such as the cow belt or the asteroid belt.

Belt is also an informal term for a gulp or shot of liquor, such as having a few belts.
