Bema

Bema, in Greek, is a step or raised place. In ancient Athens, orators spoke from such a platform. In ancient and Orthodox churches, the altar part or sanctuary, is called by this name. In Judaism, the term is spelled 'bima' or 'bimah' and denotes the podium or platform in a synagogue from which Torah and Prophets are read.
