Bertha

Bertha, literally 'bright one' in German, is a goddess in the Southern German mythology. She is goddess of the spinning-wheel principally, and of the household as dependent on it, in behalf of which and its economical management she is often harsh to idle spinners. At her festival thrift is the rule. It is a popular female name. A deep collar attached to the top of a dress having a low neckline is also called bertha. It is typically made of lace or other thin fabric. Such a dress and usage of the term is chiefly historical.
