Besançon

Besançon is a city in northeaster France, the capital of the department of Doubs, near the border with Switzerland. It is a very strong place; fortified by Vauban; abounds in relics of Roman and mediæval times; watchmaking a staple industry, employing thousands of the inhabitants; manufactures also porcelain and carpets.
