Bheemunipatnam

Bheemunipatnam is a town in Andhra Pradesh in India. It is located close to Vijayawada and is known for its historical heritage.

A tradition says that it was established during the Mahabharata, and was named after Bheem, on of the Pandav princes.

However, archaeological evidence discovered in the region puts the origins of the town to about 3rd century BC. The evidence shows that the town was closely associated to early Buddhism.

At the confluence of Gosthani River and the Bay of Bengal, there lies a beautiful and tranquil Bheemunipatnam Beach.

There are remains of a 17th century fort and cemetery constructed by the early Dutch settlers. However, a port is there in somewhat good condition which was established by Dutch East India Company.
