Bhim

Bhim is an epithet of Shiv.

Bhim was also the name of a king of Vidarbh who had three sons and a daughter. Their names were Dam, Dant, Daman and Damyanti.

Bhim was also the name of Vishnu.

Bhim was also the name of a Pandav prince who was son of Kunti by Vayu. He figures in the great epic the Mahabharat. According to Indian mythology, Vayu is considered to be a god. Vayu literally means wind, and thus he is recognised as wind-god.

Bhim was known for his strength. He was courageous and had a great appetite. After the death of Pandu and Madari, Kunti returned to Hastinapur along with Pandav princes.

Bhim used to misuse his strength and always create terror for the Kauravas, and therefore, Kaurav decided to get rid of these problems, invited Pandav princes in the pretext of playing games on the river-bank. Duryodhan and his brothers gave Pandavas some food to eat. After eating they fell asleep. Duryodhan had secretly mixed poison in the food which was eaten by Bhim. Duryodhan and his brothers tied the hands and feet of Bhim and threw him into the river. He reached the Naglok where the serpent bit him. Although, he had the capacity to neutralize the poison, he met the serpent king Vasuki with his grievance, who gave him a divine drink that gave him strength of a thousand elephants. Bhim stayed eight days in the Naglok. He returned home to console his family where they were anxious at his absent. Pandavas spent a few days in the forest where Bhim was married to the sister of Hidimb whose name was Hidimba. They had a son whose name was Ghatotchak. Pandavas went to the city named Ekchakra, disguising themselves as poor Brahmins where Bhim killed a daemon named Bak. Bak had terrorized the people of the city. Bhim was also married to Draupadi along with other Pandava brothers. Bhim had a son named Sutsom by Draupadi. In the Mahabharat war Bhim fought bravely and ferociously. He struck terror everywhere. He killed Duhshasan and rest of the brothers of Duryodhan. Bhim drunk Duhshasan’s blood after killing him and he fulfilled his oath. Bhim fought with Duryodhan. Both were equally strong so battle lasted longer. On the suggestion of lord Krishna he hit below the belt of Duryodhan and broke his thigh that caused his death. Bhim killed Ashvatthama , who had killed Drupadi’s all the sons when they were asleep. Bhim had also married Balanhara, who was a daughter of the king of Kashi. Sarvag was their son.

Bhim was also the name of the Puru king who was son of king Parikshit by his wife Suyasha, and grandfather of Pratip. Bhim was married to Kumari, the princes of Kekay. They had a son named Pratishrava.
