Big

Big refers to something that is considerable in size, extent, or intensity. Sometimes the word is used in combination with other words to denote the biggest one, such as the big toe; a grown up, such as big boy; an elder, such as big brother; great enthusiasm, such as big fan; and considerable importance or seriousness, such as big problem.

The word is also used informally as modifier to denote some activity in very often or on a very large scale, such as big drinker; to ambitiously large scale, such as big plans; great popularity of something that excites great interest in public, such as a music band big in a city; someone holding important position or having great influence on others, such as a big man; and someone generous, such as big of him (used often ironically). 'The bigs' is also an informal term for the major league in a professional sports, especially used in North America.

It also denotes a woman who is in an advanced stage of pregnancy, such as big with child. Such a usage is now considered archaic. It is sometimes used figuratively, such as big with fate.
