Bird's-nest

Bird's-nest, also called giant bird's-nest, is a brownish or yellowish flowering plant. This North American plant belongs to wintergreen family and is a saprophyte lacking chlorophyll. It grows scalelike leaves. 'Pterospora andromeda' is its botanical name, and it belongs to the family Monotropaceae.

There is also a fungus called bird's-nest fungus. It grows on dead wood and other plant debris across the world, producing a small bowl-shaped fruiting body opening to reveal egg-shaped organs containing the spores. Several genera of bird's-nest fungus are found of which Crucibulum levis is the most common variety. It belongs to the family Nidulariaceae, and the class Basidiomycetes.
