Bit

Bit is a small piece, part, or quantity of something. A bit was formerly a unit of 12 and 1/2 cents used chiefly in North America. A small piece, typically made of metal, attached to a bridle is also called a bit, and is used as mouthpiece to control a horse. The small piece of metal used as a tool for drilling is also known by this name. Bit is also the name of the copper head of soldering iron, as well as the part of any other tool that is used for cutting or gripping something, such as in pliers. Bit is also a term in computing for a unit of information that is expressed in the binary system as either '0' or '1'.
