Black birch

Black birch, also called sweet birch, is a North American birch, especially of Appalachian forests. It derives its name from the brown or black colour of its bark. It grows smooth twigs. Wintergreen oil is extracted from its leaves and saps. Its botanical name is Betula lenta, and it belongs to the family Betulaceae.
