Black gum

Black gum, also sourgum or sour gum, is a tupelo, a tree with dark bark having deeply checkered pattern. It is native to eastern North America. It yields bitter blue fruits which numerous species of birds and and black bears love to eat. Nyssa sylvatica is its botanical name, and it belongs to the Nyssaceae family.
