Bleeding heart

Bleeding heart is a derogatory term for a dangerously softhearted person. Several plants having heart-shaped flowers, especially the pink or red coloured, are also known by this name, such as the popular herbaceous garden plant of the genus Dicentra belonging to the family Fumariaceae, in particular Dicentra spectabilus, and the tropical twining shrub bearing cream and red flowers, botanical name Clerodendrum thomsoniae belonging to the family Verbenaceae, which is often cultivates under glass.
