Bloodroot

Bloodroot is a plant with fleshy root that exudes red sap when cut. It is a North American plant of the poppy family. It bears white flowers and grows fleshy rhizomes (roots) underground. Sanguinaria canadensis is its botanical name, and it belongs to Papaveraceae family.

There is also an Australian plant yielding a red rhizome by this name. It is a lilylike plant. Some Aborigines of the region roast its rhizome and eat. Haemodorum coccineum is its botanical name, and it belongs to the Haemodoraceae family.
