Blot

Blot is a dark stain of dirt, ink, paint etc. As for a person's reputation, anything that tarnishes the image which is otherwise good is called a blot on the character or image. This term is also used in biochemistry for a procedure for identification in which proteins or nucleic acids separated on a gel are transferred directly to an immobilizing medium.
