Bongaigaon district

Bongaigaon is a district in the state of Assam in India. It was carved out of Goalpara and Kokrajhar District in October, 1989. The major portion of the areas of erstwhile Bijni and Sidli estates along with tracts of Eastern Duars was curved out of Goalpara and Kokrajhar to form this district. Headquarters of the district is Bongaigaon town. It is located in the North Eastern Himalayan sub-region of India beween Longitude range 89° East to 90°96' East and Latitude range 26°28' North to 26°54' North at a distance of 210 km from state capital Guwahati.

The name of Bongaigaon town and district is the elongation of a an old village named Bongaigaon alias Bong-ai-gaon situated on the southern border of the town. Its headquarters are at Bongaigaon town which is the largest city in Lower Assam.

Bongaigaon district occupies an area of 1725.29 sq kms surrounded by Barpeta in the east, the Brahmaputra in the south and Kokrajhar in the north and west corner. The population of the district as per census 2011 was 738804.

It was the last capital of the Kamatapur Kingdom and home to many historical monuments of Assamese culture.
