British Association

British Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS), renamed the British Science Association (BSA) in 2009, was founded in 1831 on the suggestion of Sir David Brewster's (1781–1868) in a review of Charles Babbage's (1791 – 1871) Decline of Science in England. It functions as association of men of all departments of science for the encouragement of scientific research and the diffusion of scientific knowledge, which holds its meetings annually under the presidency of some distinguished scientist, now in this, now in that selected central city of the country. It is divided into eight sections — mathematical, chemical, geological, biological, geographical, economic, mechanical, and anthropological.
