History

According to Prof. Goti John this city was named "BEDAMOOTH" in an ancient inscription (stone writeup) which is now in Lucknow Musium. In that Period this pradesh was known as Panchal. A line of that Stone Writeup says that there was a village “BHADAUNLAK” near it. Muslim Historian Mr. Roz Khan Lodhi said that King Ashoka Built a Buddh Vihar & Kila and he named it BuddhMau. However, some historian believe that there was a Ahir Raja Buddh who established this town in 905 and after his name it was named Buddhamau.

It is now clear from these evidence that Budaun has an ancient history.

Budaun was under muslim rule in the middle ages. Muslim era started in 1196, when Kutubuddin Aibak conquered Budaun forte. It came under British rule in 1801.
