Camisards

Camisards were Huguenots of the Cévennes, so called because they wore a camiso (a chemise in French), a blouse over their armour. They took up arms by thousands in serious revolt against Louis XIV, in which others joined, under Jean Cavalier their chief, after, and in consequence of, the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685). They were partly persuaded and partly compelled into submission by Marshal Villars in 1704.
