Cannonchet

Cannonchet (c. 1630-1676) was Narragansett chief. He was leader during King Philip's War of 1675-76 against white settlement. He was defeated, but escaped to attack again. He was finally captured, and sentenced to death, shot. His head was sent to Hartford, Connecticut, as a trophy.

Wisdom & Quotes

  • I was born a prince; if princes speak to me I will answer. Since none are present, I am honour bound to keep silent. Oneko, the noble son of Uncas, shall be my executioner. I like it well; for I shall die before my heart is soft, or I have spoken anything unworthy of myself.
- upon hearing he was sentenced to die

John Dryden
