Carniola
Carniola is a historical region in Slovenia, which was a duchy and crownland of the Austrian empire (1335–1919), South-West of Austria, on the Adriatic, South of Carinthia. The region was divided between Yugoslavia and Italy in 1919, but became part of Yugoslavia during 1947–92. The entire region became part of Slovenia when in 1992, the members of the European Union recognised Slovenia as an independent state on 15 January 1992, and the United Nations accepted it as a member on 22 May 1992.The region contains quicksilver mines, second only to those of Almaden, in Spain. The surface is mountainous, and the soil is not grain productive, though in some parts it yields wine and fine fruit.
