Castanet

Castanet (1256-1317), full name Bernard de Castanet, was bishop of Albi, France. He procured the canonisation for Louis IX (1214 – 1270), King of France, in 1297, later known as St. Louis. Pope Boniface VIII, in a bull of 29 September 1297, secularized the canons which led to an intense struggle between Castanet and the canons of the cathedral chapters over redistribution of properties and rights. In 1307, he was accused of serious crimes including murder, and was deposed by the pope. However, in 1308, Pope restored his authority and transferred him to the diocese of Le Puy-en-Velay. He presided over that diocese until he was named a Cardinal in 1316, and promoted to the Suburbicarian Diocese of Porto. The diocese of Albi had fallen vacant at that time, and therefore Pope granted him some privileges for the diocese of Albi too.
