Cellular Jail
The Cellular Jail is located in the South Andaman district of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a Union Territory of India. It is one of the most important monument that reminds of the prisoners who fought for the freedom of their country from British rule. The construction of this Cellular Jail started in 1896 and was completed in 1906 with 698 cells. The Jail was constructed with seven wings, spreading out like a seven-petal flower. In its centre it had a tower with a turret. Connected to this were the three storey high seven wings with 698 isolated cells. This is why it is called the Cellular Jail.
There was an initiative to demolish this tructure, however, this was saved by intervention of Ex-Andaman freedom fighters.
This colossal edifice has mutely witnessed the most treacherous of inhumane atrocities borne by the convicts, who were mostly freedom fighters. It was declared a National Memorial in 1979.
