Cerigo

Cerigo is an Ionian island in Greece, the southernmost one. Its ancient name was Cythera, presently known as Kythira. This Greek island found mention in Greek mythology, and is famous for being the Native Country of Venus and Helena. It is located between the Peloponnese and Crete. The island yields wine and fruits. In 1204, the Venetians acquired Crete and most likely at the same time Cerigo. It was assigned to France in 1797 by the Treaty of Campoformido. After several political changes, Cerigo had became part of a British protectorate on the Ionian Islands during 1798-1814. The British ruled over the islands for nearly half a century, and in 1859 it came under Greek rule.
