Chandel

Chandel is a district in the State of Manipur in India. Chandel District was formerly known as Tengnoupal District. The District lies in the south-eastern part of Manipur at 24°40' N Latitude and 93°50' E Longitude. It is bounded by Myanmar (erstwhile Burma) on the south, Ukhrul district on the east, Churachandpur district on the south and west, and Thoubal district on the north.

It is a hill district with an area of 3,313 sq. km. As per Census 2011, the population of the district is 144,182 (Male 74,579 & Female 69,603) and, the literacy rate is 70.85% (Male 77.93% & Female 63.26%).

Sub Divisions: Tengnoupal, Chandel, Chakpikarong, Machi.

Revenue Circles: Chandel, Moreh, Machi, Tengnoupal, Chakpikarong, Khengjoi.

History

The district came into existence on May 13, 1974.
