Charles Barbaroux

Charles Barbaroux (1767-1794), full name Charles Jean Marie Barbaroux, was a French advocate, born at Marseilles, of which he became town-clerk. He came to Paris "a young Spartan," and became chief of the Girondins in the French Revolution. There he represented Marseilles in the Constituent Assembly and the Convention. Later, he joined the Rolands. He sent "fire-eyed" message to Marseilles for six hundred men "who knew how to die". He held out against Marat and Robespierre. After he was declared an enemy of the people, he had to flee. He mistook a company approaching for Jacobins, drew his pistol and shot himself, but the shot miscarried. He was captured and guillotined.
