Chhath

Chhath is a major festival of Bihar in India. It is celebrated twice a year - once in the month of Chaitra and once in the month of Kartik as per Hindu calendar. During this four-day festival, the sun god is worshipped along with the goddess Chhathi Maiya. The first offering of water to the sun god is made on the sixth day of the month in the evening. Chatth Puja is the only occasion where the setting sun is worshipped. The next day, the rising sun is offered water.

The people of Bihar have immense faith in this festival who maintain sanctity and purity from even a month ahead. Folk songs are sung in the honour of ‘Surya Dev’ and ‘Chhathi Maiyya’ which can be heard at every nook and corner during the festive days.

Women fast for the good of their family and the society.
