Chitrakoot

Chitrakoot is a district in the State of Uttar Pradesh in India. The district lies between Latitude 24°48' to 25°12' N and Longitude 80°58'to 81°34' E.

It is bounded in the North by Kaushambi, in the South by Satna(M.P.) & Rewa (M.P.), in the East by Allahabad (Prayagraj), and in the West by Banda.

Area of the district is 345291 Sq Km. Population of the district as per census 2001 was 801.96 thousand.

There are There are two tehsils - Karwi and Mau; and five blocks - Chitrakoot Dham Karwi, Ramnagar, Mau, Manikpur, and Pahadi.

There are 47 nyay panchayats, 330 Gram Sabhas, and 565 villages (87 uninhabited) in the district.

History

Chitrakoot is known as an ancient place. Its name appeared in the Ramayan.

The district was created on 6th May 1997 in U.P. named Chhatrapati Shahuji Mahraj- Nager, which comprises of Karwi & Mau Tehsils and has been carved out from the Banda district. After some time, the district name was converted in Chirakoot on 4 th Sept. 1998.
